Intro
Hello, here we will put the rest of the music theory concepts not already covered in other note sections.
Major and Minor, Inverse Direction Up Or Down Thirds + Modifying Solfege
Intro
Noticed I'm having trouble translating major to minor solfege. So lets define it.
Good way to remember, is do the opposite of the direction you are going.
Going down from major to minor? Go up and modify
Going up from minor to major? Go down and modify
Visualizing Translation Side To Side
Do Major: Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti
La Minor: La Ti Do Re Mi Fa Sol
Do Major: Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti
Do Minor: Do Re Me Fa Sol Le Te
So whats the trick? The one we need to focus on is the second one so lets put it vertically instead
Do Major Do Minor
La <-> Do
Ti <-> Re
Do <-> Me
Re <-> Fa
Mi <-> Sol
Fa <-> Le
Sol <-> Te
Ti <-> Do
Do <-> Re
So whats happening here. This is a two way function. Give the context of a key, a single note can mean 2 separate solfeges.
Major Down To Minor: Up and Modify
To translate from major to minor, you need 2 steps
1. Go Up A Third
Ex:
Sol -> Ti
Re -> Fa
2. Modify Solfege To Minor, (Mi La Ti, Me La Te)
Ex:
Instead is
Do -> Mi Do -> Me
Fa -> La Fa -> Le
Sol -> Ti Sol -> Te
Minor Up To Major: Down and Modify
To translate from minor to major, you need 2 steps
1. Go Down A Third
Ex:
La <- Do
Ti <- Re
2. Modify Solfege To Major Version, (Me Le Te, Mi La Ti)
Ex:
Instead is
Sol -> Me Sol -> Mi
Do -> Le Do -> La
Re -> Te Re -> Ti
Translating Voices With Numbers Instead
To translate numbers instead, its simple. Just the same up/down triad rules. You just have to remember that these represent minor solfege. So 3 -> Me, 6 -> Le, 7 -> Te.
Do Major Do Minor
6 <-> 1
7 <-> 2
1 <-> 3
2 <-> 4
3 <-> 5
4 <-> 6
5 <-> 7
6 <-> 1
7 <-> 2
